Whether you want to brush up on your Bush family history or find a new reading retreat, we’ve listed the most captivating destinations frequented by the 41st President and the First Lady of Literacy, Barbara Bush.

Barbara Bush Literacy Plaza

Location: Houston Public Library - Central Library at 500 McKinney St, Houston, TX 77002

Join Former First Lady Barbara Bush and her canine companion Millie at the Barbara Bush Literacy Plaza, an enduring bronze statue tribute outside the Houston Public Library in downtown Houston. Five adjoining bronze book benches sit opposite her statue, creating a dedicated space for book lovers and visitors to unwind.

St. Martin's Episcopal Church

Location: 717 Sage Rd, Houston, TX 77056

St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, also known as the Bush Family Church, is a stunning space with eight gardens to enjoy a book. A Celebration of Reading: Faith, Friends, and Family featured speaker Reverend Dr. Russell J. Levenson leads the congregation and is open about his deep connection with the Bush family, who attended the church for over 50 years. The George Hotel Book Wall

Location: Century Square at 80 Century Ct, College Station, TX 77840

Although this reading spot is in College Station, it offers a unique stop for traveling book lovers! With 10,000 books stacked from floor to ceiling, this patriotic art installation is an homage to the First Lady of Literacy, Barbara Bush.

Unveiled in 2019, this space has seating areas across the installation to enjoy a delightful book or use as a fun backdrop for a colorful social post!

Houston Club (must be a member)

Location: One Shell Plaza at 910 Louisiana St Suite 4900, Houston, TX 77002

Located on the 49th floor of One Shell Plaza, members of the Houston Club can view memorabilia throughout the club, drop in for coffee, or catch up on the news in the stylish Anytime Lounge. Keep an eye out for the room names, as there are special nods to the presidential family. Membership and a dress code are required to explore this Bush hot spot.

During his time as a CIA Director until his presidency, George and Barbara Bush lived in The Manor House at The Houstonian Hotel, where they were known to enjoy tennis, swimming, and dining experiences. As an homage to the former President and First Lady, The Houstonian dedicated the Bush Suite in their honor, where you can find priceless memorabilia throughout the suite.

With shaded paths, benches, and a gazebo, this Bush landmark is a quaint getaway in the center of town where guests can catch glimpses of friendly critters like scampering squirrels, rabbits grazing on grasses, and armadillo sightings in the early morning.

If you are looking to stay indoors, enjoy a beverage from the Great Room Coffee Shop as you relax by the cozy fireplace in the Great Room lobby of the hotel.

Backstreet Café

Location: 1103 S Shepherd Dr, Houston, TX 77019

Grab a bite with a book in hand at this iconic 40-year-old River Oaks eatery. Mr. and Mrs. Bush were known to frequent the Backstreet Café patio, “He came with his chief of staff and sometimes Barbara. We always had low-fat milk ready for his coffee or cappuccino,” shared Tracy Vaught of H-Town Restaurant Group. Although it may be in a busier part of town, Backstreet Café has a lovely backyard patio tucked away from the bustling city.

Enjoy a reader's ultimate escape at The Barbara Bush Rose Garden and the Presidential Pond, where you can take memorable photos, peaceful strolls, and picnics. Dedicated to the former First Lady in 2005, the Barbara Bush Garden is painted with a stunning array of florals circling the Presidential Pond for a moment to enjoy the simplicity nature offers.
