Children Explore Future Career Possibilities Thanks to New Family Place Library Opening in South Houston

On Tuesday, June 27th, the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation alongside PNC Foundation, and Harris County Public Library, unveiled the newest Family Place Library™ at South Houston Branch Library. The opening of the South Houston Branch Family Place Library™ marks the fifth location in libraries supported by the PNC Foundation’s Grow Up Great initiative and the 20th library opened within the Harris County and Houston Public Library systems.

Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation President & CEO, Julie Baker Finck spoke at the event, accompanied by PNC Regional President Julie Young Sudduth, Harris County Public Library Director Edward Melton, and South Houston Mayor Joe Soto. The introductions were followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony in front of the new installation.

After the ceremony, attendees also got a chance to explore the new Family Place Library™ and experience all the library has to offer. The installation featured interactive early literacy materials, games, toys, and books that attendees were able to utilize. Foundation President & CEO, Julie Baker Finck, Ph.D even received a quick “check-up” with the library’s doctor kit as a part of the new installation.

Family Place Libraries™ are strategically constructed within community libraries. Designed to encourage children and parents to advance their skillset in early learning and development, staff at each library receive specialized training to expand programs boosting early education and growth of children under age five.
