Fall Into a Good Book With President & CEO Julie Baker Finck

It has been a while since I shared with you books on my reading list, so I thought I’d take some time to share with you what I am currently reading, and what is on my Fall reading list in hopes that it informs or inspires you to pick up a good book, and like me, be encouraged that the summer heat will indeed pass.

I am currently reading "The Spectacular" by Fiona Davis. Set in 1920s New York City, this historical fiction novel takes readers on a journey through the glamorous world of the Grand Central Terminal. Davis weaves together the stories of two women, a captivating actress and a young woman with dreams of becoming an artist, as they navigate love, ambition, and the secrets hidden within the iconic landmark. I thoroughly enjoyed “Lions of Fifth Avenue,” so if you enjoy her writing style, be sure to check that one out too!

Here are 5 books that are on my Fall list to read:

1. "Crook Manifesto" by Colson Whitehead: In this collection of essays, Whitehead explores the complex relationship between race, identity, and society. Drawing from his own experiences as a Black man in America, he delves into topics such as cultural appropriation, systemic racism, and the power of art to challenge the status quo. Check out other fabulous books from this Pulitzer Prize-winning author, including one of my all-time favorites “The Underground Railroad” which was optioned by Netflix and is streaming now.

2. "The Making of Another Major Motion Picture" by Tom Hanks: Written by the beloved actor himself, this memoir takes readers behind the scenes of the filmmaking process. Hanks shares his experiences, anecdotes, and reflections on the art of storytelling, offering a fascinating glimpse into the world of cinema. I plan to enjoy this book on audible to hear Tom share his story in his own voice.

3. "The Last Masterpiece" by Laura Morelli: Set in Renaissance Florence, this historical fiction novel follows the journey of a young artist striving to create his greatest masterpiece. Morelli skillfully intertwines art, passion, and the pursuit of perfection, painting a vivid portrait of the art world during a transformative era. Not only is this book my favorite genre, but it is also sent during one of my favorite time periods in history.

4. "The Keeper of Hidden Books" by Madeline Martin: In this enchanting blend of historical fiction and mystery, Martin takes readers on a captivating journey through time. Set in both present-day and 15th-century Scotland, the story follows a rare book curator as she unravels the secrets hidden within an ancient library. No surprise that books about books and/or lovers of books made my list.

5. "Never Never" by Colleen Hoover and Taryn Fisher: In this gripping psychological thriller, Hoover with co-author Fisher invites readers into the mysterious world of Charlie and Silas, two teenagers who awaken with no memory of who they are or how they ended up in their predicament. As they search for answers, they uncover dark secrets that threaten to shatter their lives forever. Check out Hoover’s other books – romance and thriller. Her books are page-turners, and we should support Texas authors.

Whether you're a fan of memoirs, immersive historical fiction, or gripping psychological twists, these titles are sure to satisfy your literary cravings. So, turn down your thermostat and pretend a new season is upon us, grab a cozy blanket, a steaming cup of tea or coffee, and fall into a good book.
