Literacy Point of Light: Young Professionals Group Member Casaundra Johnson
Meet Casaundra Johnson, a passionate member of the Barbara Bush Young Professionals Group and an Assistant Principal with Harmony Public Schools. Casaundra has continually worked to make a positive impact through her commitment to literacy and education with a lifelong dedication to volunteering that began in her church community. Fun fact: Casaundra is archived in the Library of Congress—twice!
For Casaundra, literacy represents more than just a skill; it’s a gateway to understanding, growth, and opportunity. Her experience as a reading interventionist, English language arts instructional coach, and current assistant principal has given her unique insight into the transformative power of literacy.
“Literacy has had a profound impact on me and many people I care about,” said Cassaundra. “It's empowered me to explore new ideas, communicate effectively, and navigate the complexities of the world. Seeing my students gain confidence and independence through improved reading and writing skills has been incredibly rewarding.”
One of Casaundra’s most fulfilling volunteer experiences has been replenishing Barbara’s Book Boxes with books for young readers in the Houston community.
“Imagining the joy on the faces of young readers as they choose their next literary adventure fills me with a sense of fulfillment like no other. Knowing I’m contributing to their love for reading and education is truly gratifying.”
Her passion for literacy extends beyond her professional life. Casaundra cherishes discussing books and ideas with her loved ones and has witnessed the profound impact of reading within her own family. An avid reader, she is currently exploring research on student engagement while pursuing her Doctorate in Educational Leadership. For leisure, she enjoys mystery novels by Agatha Christie and Mary Higgins Clark.
Casaundra’s favorite quote, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This quote reflects her guiding philosophy.
Her dedication to literacy and education inspires everyone she encounters. Through her efforts, Casaundra is helping to create a brighter future for countless young readers.
