Kristin Chenoweth Moves the Crowd at Power of Literacy Luncheon

On October 20, more than 550 literacy advocates gathered at The Post Oak Hotel in support of the Ladies for Literacy Guild’s 8th annual Power of Literacy Luncheon, aptly themed “The Gift of Reading.” Thanks to the stellar leadership of Chair Maureen Higdon and Guild President Stick Delaup and the generosity of sponsors and contributors, nearly $525,000 was raised to provide literacy programs and resources to underserved children and families across our city. Phillips 66 served as Title Sponsor for the event.

We are grateful to our featured speaker, Emmy® and Tony® Award-winning actress, singer, and New York Times bestselling author Kristin Chenoweth for sharing insights into her book, I’m No Philosopher, But I Got Thoughts, and to KPRC 2 news anchor Keith Garvin for serving as Emcee and Ernie Manouse, Executive Producer and Host of Houston Public Media, for serving as moderator.

During the conversation, Kristin spoke about her family, friends, career, and recent marriage to Josh Bryant who was also in attendance.

“One of the hardest things I learned was forgiveness,” said Kristin Chenoweth. “When I learned how to forgive myself and forgive others, I felt free. We all need to forgive ourselves and each other more.”

When asked if she had any final, parting words or advice, Kristin Chenoweth, paused, took a deep breath, then began singing “Smile” A Capella to which the audience gave her a standing ovation as she exited the ballroom.

If you believe in the power of literacy and wish to become a volunteer, we encourage you to learn more about volunteer opportunities through the Ladies for Literacy Guild and become a member.
