Science Of Reading In Action

Recognizing that phonics and reading comprehension go hand in hand, the Foundation is continuing a partnership with Spring Branch Independent School District to develop and implement, the Science of Reading in Action (SORIA) program, a program to supplement existing curriculum and give kindergarten and first grade teachers access to classroom resources they need to best integrate the fundamental aspects of literacy development.

The Science of Reading in Action provides direct instruction, guided practice, and reading resources as curriculum supplements to ensure that students are taught the science of reading in a way that leads to finding joy and meaning in reading. Specifically, in partnership with Spring Branch ISD district leaders and classroom teachers, we strategically curated a collection of 50 teacher read aloud books and designed user-friendly, custom-created teaching guides to reinforce auditory recognition of letter sounds and development of comprehension.

Teachers received program specific training and instructional guides in order to best utilize the reading and activity kits to ensure students will show demonstrated improvements as measured by Texas Academic Performance Reports (TAPR), district-wide assessments, and the High Frequency Word Evaluations.

By working together with Spring Branch ISD, we are confident that the resources curated and designed will not only boost teachers’ capacity and competencies in delivering high-quality instruction, but also lead to greater emergent literacy outcomes for students. Furthermore, we believe that these resources will become a necessity for classrooms across Greater Houston and beyond.

Background

In 2019, the Texas Legislature passed House Bill 3, which, in part, mandates all school districts and public charters to implement the science of reading in all kindergarten through third grade classrooms. The science of reading is a systematic multifaceted approach to reading instruction that involves word recognition and language comprehension. As such, it is a strategy to build a strong foundation for early literacy success. The legislation also requires educators to successfully complete a Science of Reading Academy and to apply science of reading strategies in their classrooms.
