Literacy Point of Light: Guild Member Barbie Prusak

Meet Barbie Prusak, a dedicated Ladies for Literacy Guild member and Reading Roundup team leader at Cooper Elementary School in Spring ISD. As an active member of Ladies for Literacy, Barbie brings a lifelong appreciation for reading and education to her role.
Barbie’s decision to volunteer was influenced by close friends, Laurie Lashier and Carrie Hill, who recognized her passion for literacy and encouraged her to get involved. “My good friends suggested that I would enjoy it, and they were correct,” said Barbie.
Barbie has found immense joy and fulfillment through her volunteer service. In addition to giving of her own time as a literacy volunteer and enlisting friends to join, Barbie secured commitments of volunteer and financial resources from Chevron Phillips Chemical where her husband, Steve, serves as President and CEO.
For Barbie, literacy is more than just a volunteer opportunity; it’s a personal mission. “Both my mother and sister were teachers. My mother instilled in me the importance of reading from an early age,” said Barbie.
From the moment Barbie walked through the front door of Cooper Elementary School as a Reading Roundup volunteer to share stories and books with second graders, Barbie was hooked. It didn’t take long for Barbie to form great relationships with school leadership and teachers and develop a plan to further support, not only literacy, but also the whole child. Understanding that learning can't happen when emotions and insecurities run high, Barbie is working to supply each classroom with a 'calming kit' - a collection of tools to soothe anxiety and calm emotions. In addition, plans are being made to support the school's daily attendance by providing incentives for students with perfect attendance.
Barbie makes things happen! First, motivate kids to get to school. Then, support their social-emotional needs. Finally, share a book and her love of reading with second graders. Barbie has been instrumental in demonstrating her love of literacy not just through words, but also through good deeds.
Beyond her work in the classroom, Barbie is also a Butterfly Pin Benefactor for the campaign commemorating Barbara Pierce Bush’s 100th birthday. In this role, she is helping to raise awareness and funds to continue the advancement of Barbara Bush’s literacy legacy.
Barbie’s dedication to literacy continues to inspire those around her. Whether leading efforts at Cooper Elementary or supporting literacy initiatives in her community, she embodies the belief that small, consistent efforts can lead to meaningful change. Barbie is truly a point of light for literacy.
