Literacy Point of Light: Young Professionals Group Co-Service Chair, Megan Henson
Megan’s volunteer journey with the Foundation started almost a year ago after a sparked interest in the Young Professionals Group during her attendance at a Houston Young Professionals event. She discovered YPG and was immediately attracted to their commitment and enthusiasm for literacy. Describing their passion and excitement about the work as energizing, she signed up to be a member and later became a part of the executive leadership team.
Growing up as an avid reader and writer, Megan has always understood the transformative power of literacy. Her personal connection to literacy drives her commitment to ensuring others have the same opportunities for growth and exploration through reading. She is currently engrossed in Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak, and her all-time favorite book is Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. However, when it comes to the book series she revisits the most, Megan confesses a fondness for the Harry Potter series.
“Reading has always been a huge part of my life. I grew up as an avid reader and writer and even pursued writing as a major in college. Reading inspired me to be creative and imaginative as a child and led me to books that inspired and shaped my perspective now.”
Megan sees volunteering as a source of inspiration and fulfillment. Emphasizing how servant leadership has always been crucial in her life, and giving back to the community leaves her empowered. Megan’s passion for creating a positive impact in her city is evident in her active role with YPG.
A memorable experience with the YPG for Megan occurred earlier this summer during the Camp Adventure program. Volunteering at Blackshear Elementary, she assisted with science projects in classrooms, particularly during the creation of magnetic slime. The excitement and enjoyment radiating from the kids left a lasting impression on Megan, providing her with a renewed sense of purpose in her commitment to community service.
Megan’s dedication and steadfast commitment to the Foundation stands as a testament to the impact one individual can have on a community. We are grateful for her passion and her service to others and can’t wait to continue our mission together, of improving lives through the power of literacy. Thank you to Megan and the rest of our members in the Young Professional Group.
