Ways to Give: Corporate Matching Gift Programs

We are excited to share with you this second article in a series we launched in August, called “Ways to Give” in which we share how you can diversify your charitable giving and maximize benefits to you and your impact on the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation. In this edition, we focus on corporate matching gift programs. 

Corporate matching gift programs have gained immense popularity in recent years. These programs allow employees to make charitable donations and have their contributions matched 1:1 or at a certain percentage defined by their employers. Companies also have guidelines in place, including a maximum amount per employee they will agree to match and a budget set aside for such contributions. Matching gift programs not only benefit the employees and the organizations they support, but also help employers reach their corporate social responsibility goals. 

Typically, employers organize workplace giving campaigns in which employees can contribute to charitable causes through payroll deductions. However, many corporate matching gift programs extend beyond an annual campaign to include monetary gifts you make directly to charities through event sponsorships (excluding any fair market value of benefits you may receive), gifts of stock, or other form of contribution. 

Corporations with matching gift programs have a form, typically online, in which you simply complete after you donate to a charity. Your employer then processes the matching contribution directly to the charity.
